KENYA AB GAKUYUINI
KENYA AB GAKUYUINI
Thirikwa, known for its exemplary quality standards and single factory operation, produces some of Kenya's finest coffee. The cooperative runs the Gakuy-ini factory, which has been in operation since 1997. Thanks to the factory's high standards and diligent farming practices, Thirikwa has consistently produced top-tier coffee, enabling it to pay premium prices to its members. With a dedicated factory manager who has been at the helm for two decades, the factory processes cherries delivered by approximately 3,700 farmers during peak season, ensuring meticulous attention to detail and quality .The processing techniques at Gakuy-ini are carefully crafted to bring out the best in the coffee. After hand-sorting and floating, the cherries are pulped. Farmers begin delivering their cherries around 11 am, and the pulping process starts at 3 pm. The parchment is then fermented overnight, a crucial step for developing the coffee's rich flavours. Thirikwa places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability and community development. The factory recycles water used during processing, drawing from the Kiri River, which flows through the factory's grounds. This not only conserves water but also ensures a sustainable processing practice. Additionally, the cooperative practices resourceful recycling by distributing the coffee pulp back to its members. These initiatives highlight Thirikwa's commitment to environmental stewardship and support for the farming community.
